The prostate is an accessory gland in the male reproductive system. It secretes a pale liquid that is combined with sperm to keep it alive. It is located beneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra, that is to say the duct that carries urine from the bladder to the outside.
A normal adult prostate is the shape of a chestnut, measuring around 3 cm long, 4 cm wide and 25 mm thick, with an average weight of 20 g. However, dimensions can vary according to age and person. After 50 years of age, the central part of the prostate tends to grow, dislocating itself outside the actual gland. This part, called the prostate adenoma, causes the gland to reach dimensions up to two to three times its normal size.
We do not know what causes this, but it is thought to be due to hormonal variations that occur with age.

Prostate gland infection is defined as prostatitis. It presents symptoms such as a sense of weight in the perineal region, suprapubic and testicular pain. It is diagnosed by collecting prostatic secretions expressed through massage. It can be associated with adenomatous hypertrophy and worsen urinary obstruction due to the resulting inflammatory swelling.

Prostatic adenomectomy involves the removal of the adenomatous tissue in order to improve urination. The gland is therefore not totally removed, but simply emptied.
A number of studies show that prostatectomy causes a reduction in the length and circumference of the penis and a reduction in sexual function.
